Ecuador’s president declares a national holiday after the team reaches the knockout stages of the 2026 FIFA World Cup

Ecuador’s President Daniel Noboa declared a national holiday on Friday after the country’s football team reached the knockout stages of the World Cup with a shock 2-1 victory over Germany.

«Thank you to the players and the coach who, despite the criticism, the insults and the difficult moments they have experienced, managed to recover and bring this enormous joy to the whole country. Tomorrow is a holiday!» Noboa said in a post on X.

Ecuador needed victory in its last match in Group E on Thursday, after a defeat against Ivory Coast and a draw against Curaçao.

The South American side conceded early against the Germans but fought back to secure victory, sparking celebrations among fans in a sold-out stadium in New York/New Jersey.

Germany was already assured of qualification as group winners. Ivory Coast finished second after the 2-0 win over Curaçao.

Ecuador qualified as one of the top eight third-place teams, reaching the knockout stages of the World Cup for only the second time. It advanced to the round of 16 at the 2006 tournament in Germany.
