Who is Lionel Mpasi, the DR Congo goalkeeper who impressed against England in the 2026 World Cup?

DR Congo scored in the seventh minute through a Brian Cipenga strike against England, but goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi-Nzau played an equally important role in keeping the African side ahead at half-time in the Round of 32 on Wednesday.

The 31-year-old custodian made two saves to deny Jude Bellingham’s headers from close range. He also made a crucial save on his right to block Harry Kane’s volley from the right side of the penalty area.

He was also involved in a controversial passage of play when he collided with Harry Kane in the penalty area after coming off his line, but was given a reprieve as the referee did not award a penalty to England.

In the first half he made three saves and had a goal percentage of 1.23.

Mpasi-Nzau has played for French club Le Havre since 2025. However, he has played most of his time for Rodez, a second division side in France. Interestingly enough, he also has a goal for that team.

Although he currently plays for DR Congo, Mpasi-Nzau also represented France under-17 between 2010 and 2012. He also played for Paris-Saint Germain’s B team before moving to Toulouse.
