FIFA World Cup 2026 – Penalty save inspired Norway, says goalkeeper Nyland

Norwegian goalkeeper Orjan Nyland said his country’s stunning FIFA World Cup victory against Brazil was launched by his penalty save during the 2-1 win.

Nyland saved a Bruno Guimaraes penalty in the first half before Erling Haaland struck twice in the final 11 minutes to send the South Americans crashing out in the last 16 of the stage.

Neymar’s penalty in the 100th minute came too late for five-time World Cup winners Brazil to stage a comeback.

«Obviously if you can save a penalty that early (it’s) very difficult to beat you. It was a great moment for myself, but also for the team to give ourselves some breathing room,» Nyland told reporters.

“In the end we managed to score at the right times, so that was great.”

Nyland, 35, said he hoped the win would inspire children in Norway.

“We have made some history so that hopefully many young children in Norway can relive this moment when they go to play football and that they can dream of one day being in the same position as me and that it is possible no matter where you come from,” Nyland said.

Norway will now face the winner of the match between Mexico and England later on Sunday.
