Croatia captain Luka Modric said on Wednesday that he had written a one-year contract with AC Milan to «stay competitive and in Europe».
«I am happy to be here and I am looking forward to a new adventure,» the Ballon d’Or winner of 2018 told the TV channel of AC Milan after participating in Real Madrid.
Modric, who turns 40 in September, joined the Spanish giant from Tottenham and won six Champions competitions, four La Liga titles and two Copa del Rey trophies.
«I wanted to stay in Europe, to keep playing competitive football. I had a number of other offers, but when Milan showed up for me, it was clear from the first moment,» he said.
Milan finished a disappointing eighth in the Serie A last season and does not play in the European competition.
But Modric insisted that Milan remains «one of the largest clubs in Europe».
«Milan cannot be satisfied with the average and must have the biggest goals to win titles, to compete with the best teams in the world, that’s why I am here.»
Modric signed a one-year contract, with an option for an extra season with the seven-time Champions League and 19-way Serie A winner.
«I am never satisfied, I always want more,» he warned. «If you have experienced that feeling (of winning), you want to feel it even more. I am still hungry, desire, still want more.»
To explain his lifespan, Modric said: «The most important thing is the love for the game, for football».
«That is what I still have, what I still feel in my stomach, this fire is what pushes me … There are no secrets, for me it is the passion, the love for football. I am never satisfied.»
The Runner-Up 2018 also spoke about his childhood memories of Milan.
«When I was a child, I watched the Italian league a lot, Milan was my favorite team,» he remembered.
«Also because Zvonimir Boban was there, who was my idol,» he added, referring to his countryman who wore the Rossoneri sweater from 1992 to 2001.
