«Sometimes my feet are tired and my hands are silent, but there is no peace of mind in my heart.» – WB Yeats
Laurel
While ascending the banks of Laurel Creek, it seemed sounded by Mountain Laurel. The bushes were so high and thick that everything I could see were groups of white star -shaped flowers dotted with pink against a backdrop of green leaves. Only a splinter of free space between the branches stretched out indicated the path ahead. I marveled from the flowers and outbreaks when I passed. Mountain Laurel comes in a variety of tones of white with pink purple touches. Some flowers are a soft and ghostly white with delicate fuchsia accents, others are bold with a pink so hot that bleeds in flowering. I am calmed by the beauty and calm of all the poisoned mountain laurel.
Burst
I found a great review. A tree that must have fallen during the rain storm on the day or the previous night. The trees on the road is a fairly routine occurrence, but this pauses me. It was massive, apparently in no way through him, I tried. Turning it was difficult since there was a slope pronounced both above and below. I had to let the guy out of the belt to let it sail on his own way and then continue slowly. Very careful, I went down the slope that grabbed trunks, branches and rocks of the trees while doing so. I turned the shattered tree, then I got on the path. It was a slow process, but I felt pride in the achievement of Dude and I.
Scare
After one walk and climbing on another mountain, I went to the Helvey’s Mill shelter. I put the rainfly from my store to dry the sun. I lowered a long decrease in water and then backed away. He was exhausting pysicly and mentally. Making any walk that is not specifically part of the AT is hard, but I do what I owe for the water. While resting at the shelter after my excursion, a man suddenly walked around the corner. We had not heard it coming. I shouted surprised and the guy jumped fiercely barking. We all get scared. Fortunately, he ended up being harmless and gave me a team boots sticker. Usually, he walks along the path with his Corgi puppy called Boots. We couldn’t meet boots until we were in the Shenondoah National Park.
Tired feet
On June 1 I stayed at the feet tired hostel, near Mile 610 of the AT. It is a white farm on a large plot of earth. They have outdoor showers in a barn as a building. I arrived at the shower with me to take a very necessary bath. He had been on the road to me 27 days at the point, so he desperately needed cleaning. My friend of Sendero Squid was staying in the bunk in front of Dude and me. He hugged with a guy in his own bed and helped me watch him. Acorn and Cinderella appeared and stayed for dinner. The owners of the shelters prepare abundant and delicious meals at breakfast and dinner. For dinner they introduced me the vegetable curry in the rice, salad and pastel bed for dessert. Breakfast was scrambled eggs and pancakes.
Trents & Treks
Before returning to the road, I went to a local place called Trent’s Grocery. The name is misleading, it is more like a continence store of the service station than a grocery store. My food options were limited, mainly consisted of a bag of fries. Fortunately, Mom had sent me a resupping box to tired feet shelter, so I just needed a few supplementary snacks. When I left the store, I realized that my hands were empty. I had left my nut posts in the shelter! I can practically not walk without nut posts in my hands at this time. I trust them for balance, support and to use some strength of the arm while the hill goes up. I couldn’t be on the way without them. I contacted the shelter and one of the owners brought them gently and then left me in the at Trail Head, saving me a half -mile walk.
Judgment or instinct?
There were two types of rough appearance in the refuge of the knobs of Doc, Mile 628. I said hey and presented a guy as a pen. The names of the boys’ paths were private and tank. Those names are a bit intrusive and they did not help me feel more comfortable to be close to them as the only woman in the area. I quickly went to configure my store in the best available place that I could find, which was in a bed of leaves and inclined. For my relief, Weatherman came, along with Samwise. I sat with them at the picnic table of the shelter to prepare dinner while the sun vanished from heaven. Privy and Tank became friends with the guy, providing close attention and pieces of their food. Pivy did green tea and offered me a tea bag after I promised to love green tea. They ended up being good guys. I felt comfortable going to sleep that night next to the shelter. They reminded me that I should not judge a book on its cover, but as a solo hiker I should listen to my instincts. Certainly it is worth more cautious … I am glad that the community of trails is full of good people.
Dq
When I approached the road to Pearisburg, VA, Mile 374.4, I sent a message to a transport driver that was published for the area in Farout. He picked up and I took me to Diary Queen. When I asked him about the payment, he said he did not worry, he was already in the area, so it was nothing to take us. Friend and I have a free trip! I walked directly to Dairy Queen with his red vest on as if he had done it 100 times. No one seemed to hit. I had it with a short strap, I kept it hugged to my hip and, on the other hand, I was in his best behavior. I asked for a salad, pretzels, french fries and, best of all, a snowstorm fluffutter reese! Doube helped me to eat my fried potatoes along with PRIVY AND TANKS, when they entered and a local gentleman also donated the rest of his fries to the cause of the fattening type. Friend, like all hikers, we had lost weight on the road. I gave him extra food whenever possible. He also received some ice cream snacks. We had a dense calories lunch, it was perfect to feed on the rest of our walk that day.
FKT
This season of trails, an Ultrarunner, named John Kelly, took AT in an attempt to break the fastest known time (FKT). Tara Dower currently has the FKT. He completed the Apalachain path last year, going over 40 days. John Kelly was going to Nobo. On June 5, ironically near a place called Kelly Knob, John Kelly happened to us. A man named Easy Boy and his dog, Molly had magic of trails on a gravel road crossing under Kelly Knob. They informed me there that John Kelly would be running soon. I myself, along with some other hikers, sat on small tables and easy chairs, the easy boy had directed us drinking drinks and eating snacks that filled the bed of their truck. We look forward to the arrival of John Kelly. We hope and wait, some hikers continued after a while. Just when I had finished putting the backpack and I was putting myself on my own, John Kelly, along with his pacemaker, ran to the path of the path. When the guy saw people running towards him, he put him to the limit. He began to bark his head. Friend is fine if we approach people but it scares us if people approach us. I tried to calm him. I looked up, made a brief visual contact with a smile and a head with Joh Kelly before he went along the path again. We observe him already his crew of corridors as the next great rise and out of sight raised.
Now, weeks later, it is known that John Kelly could not complete his attempted FKT due to an ankle injury. However, he used his platform to raise money for the relief of Hurricane Helene, so that is a victory!
