Day 87: spots and the dream of death

  • Rod Hollow Shelter (996) to the refuge of Sam Moore (1002.9)
  • 2165 feet rise, 2119 feet

Today he felt like a day of remains. We expected to end Virginia tomorrow, but we discovered that we need to delay one more day. The weather is still in the 90s with moisture to match. Errors are thriving. If we stop, we are covered with flying insects. We feel a bit like The Walking Dead.

Sleep was not well last night. We stayed in the shelter because it was cooler than the store and insects had calmed down at dusk. Around midnight, insects came to look for flavored walking things. We alternate between roasting under our comforters or being celebrated when we throw the hot roofs.

Suffocating Sunrise

When the sun risen at 5:30 am, we threw the towel. He had been too hot to sleep all night anyway. We get up and change our sleep clothes quasi dries to our wet hiking clothes and salt inlays.

We try to hang our clothes at night to let them dry, but sometimes the humidity is so high that they feel more humid in the morning than when we hang them.

We both have three pairs of socks, a luxury amount. At the beginning of the walk there was so much rain that it was useful to have an extra torque. Now, with heat and sweat, the extra pair reduces the number of days that must be put into crispy socks.

Medicated dust for spots

With all the moisture of the rain from the beginning and now Sudo, I fight with the eruptions. I call them places. I carry a large amount of dust. Originally, I brought it to deal with the usual eruptions in the «sitting place.» He had tried a variety of anti-chafing creams, but the dust worked better for me.

When it was cold and humid in spring, I began to develop points and rashes associated with the foot of the early trench. The AP that I saw in Daleville, VA was recommended with my dust medicated in my socks. It was a revelation.

When I started developing points from the eruption of heat, I looked for medicated dust. I use it in my socks, underpants, sports bra and the sleeves of my hood.

Walking in heat

After dealing with heat without movement, he really felt fresher walking than he had sat or sleeping. The light breeze created by our movement, combined with our wet clothes, provided a small amount of air conditioning.

We find a very long and stable swamp bridge. Aftet all my slippers and falls on wet swamp bridges, I approached cautiously. Fortunately, I was not wet or slippery with algae. Walking on him was really comfortable.

The dreaded roller coaster

Soon after the swamp bridge, we arrived at the dreaded Russian mountain. We listen to local people who knew well the path that trailboss is quite proud of this section. Certainly, it is something memorable.

We try to be happy and animated. After approximately one mile, we mark. It was not the roller coaster, but the heat that had us.

The path was rocky, but not too fell. There were spaces between the rocks to place the feet.

The dream of death

Around 1 PM, we reached a good river and decided to take a longer break. After posing for a silly set of portraits making each other, the historian declared that he had to take a nap.

He was not sleepy, so he took the opportunity to sit and read. The historian knocked on our store’s footprint and used his folded pad for a pad. The mistakes were gently persistent and somewhat persuaded by Permethian to maintain his distance.

Time moved me away. I realized that 2 hours had passed.

I looked and the pose that the historian has assumed looked more like a body than to a hiker. He gave me a pause of the moments, but it was well revived shortly after and we continued our walk.

Poke berry

Shortly after leaving our siesta place, we saw a set of Poke shrubs. I had not seen anywhere and was very excited. I remembered when I was a child collecting a poke berry of a bush that was at the end of our entrance path.

For reasons that I could not account for then, and I still can’t understand, I pushed the berry for my nose. In panic, I tried to get it out. My mother receives credit for not panic, but she couldn’t get it out. Finally, we had to go to Dr. Rainey’s office for extraction. Using very long and curved tweezers, he skillfully removed the berry and gave me as a «memory.» I have no idea what happened to the berry, but that night I got ice cream.

Today I did not choose any poke berry. We will not receive any ice cream tonight.

Sam Shelter

We arrive at Sam Moore’s shelter very buggy, very Bocoso high hours a day. It was supposed to be our last night in Virginia, but our hostel reserve in Harpers Ferry mixed and we have to delay one day to register. Consequently, we will have two more nights in Virginia, one in this shelter and one in Bears Den.

The refuge is so close to Bears that we discuss to walk even though it was late on the day. We decided not to do it. Maybe because it is close to Bears Den, other hikers did not appear and we had the entire area of refuge for ourselves.

We decided to sleep in the store to reduce exposure to insects. At least we could sleep on our beds without exposing our skin to insects.

After a quick dinner and somewhat depleter, we order our team and head to the store. We left the doors of the open rain to capture the little breath of air there.

The historian had few problems to fall asleep, even after his sleep nap. I threw and turned and scratched at my points. I can’t say what insect bites and what heat eruption. Tomorrow I will apply more dust. I will have to be careful not to have the pale white color on my face or people will think I’m dead.
