Day 27
Home: Trout Lake/Forest Service Road, Mile 423.8
END: Steering site, mile 443.7
Miles walked: 19.9 miles
Last night it was so pleasant. The County Park was calm and quiet, the warm and mosquito air. I decided «sleep», which means that I slept until 6:30 am instead of 6 am the sun was out and was renewed and ready for the day.
I had some tasks to finish in the morning, publishing blog posts, publish on Instagram and load my batteries. I really shouldn’t have postponed this (as I always do), but what can I say? I am a procrastinator.
In the general store, I said goodbye to the super fast Nobo that planned to do at least 35 miles today. He had had coffee and breakfast just when the store opened at 7 am and was ready to return to the road. Inside, I took my apple juice breakfast and a ham and cheese sandwich, and sat outside to do my job.
Approximately an hour later, Sun and Nik appeared. The plan was that Sun and I left around 10 in the morning and tried to make a hitch back to the path. I was a little stressed because I had a lot to do, my battery bank was not loading quickly enough, and suddenly I felt that I was not walking enough miles per day to cross the mountains before the snow. All these thoughts ran for my mind, but I had to remember myself that I was doing enough. I still had time to accelerate a bit if I needed it and there were things outside my control that could affect my walk. It couldn’t be the control of everything, so I just had to enjoy where I was at the time.
Many people seemed to have omitted Trout Lake, but I really enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere of the city. I liked that there were not too many people and that the sun and Nik and I could hang out and meet. Instead of hurrying to do things, I really had the opportunity to reduce speed in this city. While it is true that hikers have to overcome the weather, we also tend to run through the fastest experience than we need. But, if we breathe deep and calm down, we could find that there is time.
Anyway, after finishing my tasks, I bought lunch for the road and the sun, and came out and got hooked. Many cars passed us, but we weren’t lucky in the 30 minutes we were there. Fortunately, a guy told us that Gerry, one of the great paths of paths in Trout Lake, was on the porch of the general store and could be willing to take a walk. With that leadership, we put our packages on the back and return to the store. Indeed, Gerry was ready to give Sun and in addition to another hiker back to the path. Perfect!
After thanking Gerry for his kindness, we finally find ourselves back on the PCT. It was around 11:30 am, so we had a good part of the day to walk. We found many nobles, most of which seemed demacred, skinny and dirty, typical of a late stage. It was a bit fun to see how a Nobo looks through a sobo perspective. We are still fresh and excited about the path, while many nobles are ready to do.
After eating our lunch, Sun and I continue. Initially we had talked about doing 15 miles today, but the path was so easy to walk that we decided to point to 18. Could we do it?
The hours and miles flew while we passed through the moss -covered trees forest. The air was not too fresh and not too hot, the soft and soft path. We took a break with the hiker with whom we took a walk, then we continued moving.
At one point, we arrived at an open semi-galdura area that was covered with blueberry bulls. The Huckleberry season is almost here, so there was a series of mature berries that I could not avoid choosing and eating. Delicious!
When I asked Sun where he wanted to take the next break, he said: «In the parking lot. There may be magic of trails.»
Indeed, when we arrived, we saw a signal that said: Trail Magic Tacos. Hurrah! There, a guy called Daywalker, had just prepared. He had some extra food with him, so he thought he would make some tacos for hikers. There was only one problem: I had forgotten the tortillas! Do not worry, we were not fussy, so we ate deconstructed tacos.
Daywalker had been walking through the PCT section per section in the last 12 years, and was willing to meet his friend to walk an Othr section in the next few days. Before realizing, 4 nobles and a sobos appeared. There was not enough for everyone, but they all got something.
With 4 more miles to go, Sun and I said goodbye and headed. We had a good time to our planned site, but the problem was that we were in the Indian sky and our site was close to a lake. That meant one thing: mosquitoes! We were instantly swimming there, so much that we immediately turned and chose to walk another 2 miles instead of dealing with them. I needed water since we were in a stretch without water, but I couldn’t even collect water on the lake because they were eating me even while walking.
Now, Sun and I were in a mission to find a camp, anywhere. We spent one small, but the other sobo had claimed him after seeing that mosquitoes were invading us. We walked more, but Sun was tired and hungry. We just needed a place to work.
After taking a break to regroup, we walk a little more and finally we found a stealthy place that, although it is not ideal, it was just what we needed. It was 8:30 pm and we were ready to end our day.
After configuring our tents, we agreed to have an easier day tomorrow.
And that is a day in the life of a PCT Sobo hiker!
