Why am I going to walk my first walks in foreign countries

I! My name is Izzy and I am an avid New England hiker. I had the idea of making a walk when my friend gave me her mythical stories of the PCT in 2023. It was the first time that I had even heard of a walk. That was 2 years ago when he led a trip in the great cannon he was in, the first backpack or hiking trip he had been.

Then I immersed myself first to learn about all kinds of walks. Then, last year, my friend returned from doing the AT in a summer in 2024. I heard his stories with the same open eyes he had listening to PCT’s stories. I promised that the following year I would complete a walk, regardless of length or location. So now I’m here, fulfilling that promise to me.

The walks

In the time between the end of last summer and now, I studied the list of walks that I had created in my research on the endless path lists on the Internet. One stood out for me: the Skye path. The Skye path follows the length of Skye island in Scotland. Adding up to about 80 miles while crossing about 10k+ feet of profit, I thought it would be a great option for a first walk. I even had confidence in my ability to resist the endless rain that seems to exceed Scotland (I studied in Ireland the spring before and made a lot of walk in the torrential rain there). However, I was not sure enough to go alone, so I asked my friends to join me on this trip. Both responded with enthusiasm that they would love to join. I was euphoric and began to plan immediately.

Meanwhile, in the desire for even more through hiking, I began to plan another walk. At that time, I was thinking of making the New England path. He was close to home and felt safe to address alone. All the time, I would complete it a few weeks before going to Scotland winning invaluable hiking experience. Unfortunately, due to work circumstances and other plans, I had to discard that idea.

I started reflecting on the opportunities I had this summer. It was then that my family received an invitation to my cousin’s wedding in France. Exstatic on the wedding, I thought I could fit a walk after the ceremony. I learned that the festivities would end with a remaining week until I had to be in Scotland. Fearful due to my own inexperience, I decided that I would be doing a walk in France.

My choice

I immediately booked it to Google to find a path. All were too complicated to achieve transport or too much time for me to complete comfortably within 6 days. Then the perfect path fell directly into my lap: the GR21. After the beautiful Alabaster cliffs of Normandy, I would emulate very well the coastal conditions of a walk in Scotland (less all the rain). The path will require that you walk around 17-20 miles per day. However, the elevation per day is only around 1.5k+ feet of profit. From the training in the whites, 20 miles a day with such gain felt completely manageable for 6 days.

Although I will still physically press, my greatest obstacle will be to overcome this mentally. I know that it is not long, and I cross several cities where I can replenish and ask people questions, but navigate the laws of a walk from foreign countries and, of course, try to communicate in a language that I do not know even with the technology we have available today can be very difficult. So I definitely feel of the previous nerves, but I am excited to make this commitment with myself to complete this solo path.

My hope

I hope to continue with this itinerary and grow to be a more experienced hiker after him. I can’t wait to continue sharing the story of my trips with you. Hiking and backpack have encouraged me to become a better person and I hope these paths continue that trend. I hope that the count of this trip can take you outdoors, wherever you are.

See you again on the way,

Izzy.
