Lionel Messi doubted his participation in the World Cup 2026 after his double in the 3-0 victory of Argentina in Venezuela in the penultimate Tour of the South American qualifications.
Despite his goals against La Vinotinto and the early qualification of Argentina, the 38-year-old national captain was careful next year with his potential participation after being hit by injuries and various competitions at MLS Side Inter Miami.
«In the past, I said it, logically, it was unlikely that I would play in a World Cup at the age of 39. It is nine months away, which is close, but it is also long,» Messi said reporters in the monumental stadium after Thursday evening’s game.

Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni decided that Messi should rest on Tuesday and not travel with the national team to the last qualifying match against Ecuador in Guayaquil.
«If I feel good, I enjoy myself. And if I don’t feel good, I’ll really struggle, I’d rather not play, so we’ll see,» Messi added when he was asked about his fitness.
