WSL: Spurs -women stop taking the knee and say that gesture «no longer feels useful»

Tottenham Hotspur women have decided that they will no longer take the knee before they kick off the Ladies Super League in the Super League, in which captain Bethany England said on Sunday that anti-racism gesture has lost its impact because prejudices in football persist.

The North -London side chose to stand instead of kneeling during the Black History Month, when teams were given the choice to take the knee before competitions.

«As players, we chose not to take the knee before the kick -off this afternoon. Instead, we will rise against racism,» England said in a statement prior to the home conflict against Brighton & Hove Albion.

“I spoke with my teammates in detail and we agree that taking the knee no longer feels useful. We still see prejudices and racism, and there is so much more that everyone should do.

«This is not a tickbox – this is the lives of people, the feelings of people. It must change.»

Instead of kneeling, the club skipper said that players would wear t-shirts during warm-up to wear their anti-racism message. They wore a T-shirt that reads «Spurs Against Racism» before Sunday’s game.

«This is our way of making a position that this is not acceptable, we stand with those who are still subject to such a horrible abuse,» she added.

«We are against racism together.»

The decision reflects a similar step from the England ladies team, which stopped taking the knee after defender Jess Carter was the target of online racist abuse during this year’s European championship.

The police ultimately made arrests with regard to offensive messages on social media that were sent to Carter.
