How can India qualify for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup after the draw against Singapore?

The draw against Singapore gives India plenty to do to keep their hopes of qualifying for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup alive.

The Blue Tigers have three matches remaining – against Singapore (home), Bangladesh (away) and Hong Kong (home) – to turn around their campaign and secure a third successive place at the continental tournament.

Khalid Jamil’s side are third in the group with two points from three matches, with only the best-placed team advancing to the 2027 AFC Asian Cup.

Position Teams MP W D L G.F GO GD Points
1. Hong-Kong 3 2 1 0 5 3 2 7
2. Singapore 3 1 2 0 3 2 1 5
3. India 3 0 2 1 1 2 -1 2
4. Bangladesh 3 0 1 2 4 6 -2 1

How can India still qualify?

India must win all three remaining matches, which would take them to a maximum of 11 points, to keep their hopes of qualification alive.

However, he no longer has full control over qualifying, because the team also has to rely on other results that go his way.

Both Hong Kong and Singapore need to drop points in their upcoming matches if India are to have a chance.

If Hong Kong gets the maximum number of points from the home matches against Bangladesh and Singapore, it will secure qualification for the Asian Cup with 13 points.

If India and Hong Kong finish level on points, the tiebreak will be decided on the basis of head-to-head results. With Hong Kong having already won 1-0 at home, India will have to beat them by a margin of two goals or more to progress.

If India and Singapore both get 11 points, India would take the first place based on head-to-head points.
