Veteran Indian squash player Joshna Chinappa defeated Egypt’s Nardine Garas in straight matches to advance to the semi-finals of the Japan Open PSA Challenger event in Yokohama, Japan.

The 39-year-old former women’s world number 10 defeated Egyptian second seed Garas 11-8, 15-13, 11-9 in the quarter-finals on Saturday.

Joshna will now face fourth-seeded Egyptian Rana Ismail in the last four stage.

Earlier, the former Asian champion and world doubles champion defeated French fifth seed Lauren Baltayan 11-7,11-4, 11-9 in the second round, and Malaysia’s Anrie Goh 11-6, 11-6, 11-6 in the opening round.

Abhay Singh makes winning start at Silicon Valley Open

India’s Abhay Singh made a winning start at the Silicon Valley Open squash, a $130,500 PSA Gold event, in Redwood City (USA) on Saturday, while compatriots Velavan Senthilkumar and Ramit Tandon lost their opening matches.

Reigning national champion and world No. 29 Abhay defeated Karim El Hammamy of Egypt 12-10, 11-7, 13-11, and will meet French world No. 9 and fifth seed Victor Crouin in the second round.

Meanwhile, Senthilkumar lost to Egypt’s Kareem El Torkey 3-11, 5-11, 9-11, while Tandon fell to Balazs Farkas in a five-match thriller, which the Hungarian won 12-10, 5-11, 5-11, 11-9, 11-8.

Keerthi and Telheiba become national junior aquathlon champions

Tamil Nadu’s Keerthi Saktivel and Manipur’s Telheiba Soram won the junior girls’ and boys’ titles respectively at the National Sub-Junior and Junior Aquathlon Championships in Bhopal on Sunday.

IFA Shield: United Sports Club defeats Gokulam Kerala

I-League 2 side United Sports Club surprised Kozhikode giants Gokulam Kerala FC with a 1-0 win in their Group B league match of the IFA Shield tournament, at the Kalyani Stadium on Sunday.

Amit Basak, who came on as a substitute, scored the only goal of the match early in the second half to secure full points for United SC, who joined Mohun Bagan Super Giant to top the three-team group standings with three points each.

Both teams will now face each other on Wednesday in the final group match to determine one of the finalists. Gokulam Kerala, which lost its first match 1-5 to Mohun Bagan, ended the campaign with two defeats.

India names 222 athletes for the 3rd Asian Youth Games in Bahrain

A large contingent of 222 athletes will represent India at the third Asian Youth Games in Manama, Bahrain, from October 22 to 31.

India’s total contingent now stands at 357, including more than 100 support staff and other officials.

Olympic medalist wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt will be the chef de mission of the Indian contingent.

The Indian contingent was given a warm farewell on Sunday at a function organized by the M3M Foundation in association with Kreeda Bharati. The athletes were presented with their official uniforms.

The event was attended by Haryana Sports Minister Gaurav Gautam, Indian Olympic Association President PT Usha, M3M Foundation Chairman Payal Kanodia, Kreeda National General Secretary Bharati Prasad Mahankar, besides Dutt and other IOA officials.

Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini sent a video message urging the athletes to give their best and bring glory to the nation.
