TA Day 18: Treasure Island, Treasure Times

Trail sign for TA from Nikau Bay Campground.

Greetings from Treasure Island campsite, about 383km (239 miles) off the Te Araroa trail!

Time has flown by and my half-written blog posts have been piling up. I’ll try to catch up soon.

It’s hard to believe I’ve been walking for over 2 weeks now. Until now, northern New Zealand has been a mix of beach, coast, farmland, waterfalls, roads, steep, muddy mountains, forest trails, stream crossings and even a kayaking adventure.

My tram members: Weather Guru and Distance Frog on the move.

The landscapes are as diverse as the people we have met. As of now, I am still with five of the original eleven that started with me at Cape Reinga on September 26.

It’s been fun spending time with my tram (trail family) and meeting other hikers along the way. We do a kind of yo-yo with different walkers depending on the days of rest and the distance we travel.

Three hikers posing with some buns.

Dancin’ Dana (me; left), with Weather Guru (middle) and Distance Frog (right) recommending some angelic treats.

We’ve also met some amazing trail angels who have done a lot to help hikers and move the trail forward. Today, a couple of angels spoiled us with homemade date scones, coffee, fresh lemonade and fruit from their garden.

Even tough days are better with great people to spend time with. I feel incredibly grateful to my tram and to the wonderful community of Te Araroa. Nga mihi.
