Chelsea defeated Ajax Amsterdam 5-1 in an eventful if error-strewn UEFA Champions League 2025/26 tie that included three penalties and a red card in the pouring rain at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday.
Ajax, who have now lost all three European matches this season, saw their fate sealed in the seventeenth minute when captain Kenneth Taylor was sent off for a dangerous tackle and Marc Guiu scored a minute later.
Moises Caicedo made it 2-0 nine minutes later and although Wout Weghorst reduced the deficit with a penalty, his goal was followed late in the first half by penalties from Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez and 18-year-old Brazilian Estevao as the Amsterdam team lost discipline.
Chelsea, who have two wins and a defeat to their name in their three Champions League games so far, buzzed around Ajax for most of the second half, including an early goal from Tyrique George.
Atalanta held on to a scoreless draw against Slavia Prague
Atalanta were held to a 0-0 draw at home to Slavia Prague in a match of spurned chances and saves from both goalkeepers.

The hosts move to four points after a 4-0 defeat to champions Paris Saint-Germain before beating Club Brugge 2-1, while Slavia are on two points after starting with a 2-2 draw at home to Bodo/Glimt, followed by a 3-0 defeat at Inter Milan.
Atalanta created two early chances in quick succession, with defender Odilon Kossounou racing through on goal but sending his shot straight at Slavia keeper Jakub Markovic, who then parried Charles De Ketelaere’s strike from distance.
Markovic later made a point-blank save from Nikola Krstovic’s effort from close range, and at the other end Atalanta keeper Marco Carnesecchi made an excellent stop to deny David Moses on the stroke of half-time.
Carnesecchi saved a free kick from Lukas Provod while Kamaldeen Sulemana came off the bench for the hosts but failed to score as he went one-on-one with the keeper.
Another Atalanta substitute, Gianluca Scamacca, had a late chance saved by Markovic, and both sides will feel they did enough to earn victory but had to settle for a share of the spoils.
Atalanta are then away to Olympique de Marseille, while Slavia host Arsenal.
