Algeria has extended the contract of national coach Vladimir Petkovic and his coaching staff until 2028, the country’s football federation announced on Sunday, days before the World Cup in North America.
Petkovic’s previous contract was due to expire immediately after the tournament.
The 61-year-old, who took charge in February 2024, has seen a strong turnaround, leading Algeria to 21 wins, four draws and three defeats in 28 games. He also guided the team to qualification for the 2026 World Cup after missing out on the 2018 and 2022 editions.

Algeria also reached the quarter-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after consecutive group stage eliminations in 2021 and 2023. During Petkovic’s tenure, it rose from 43rd to 28th in the FIFA world rankings and from seventh to fourth in Africa.
The federation said the expansion “reflected stability and confidence in the work accomplished.”
Algeria opens its World Cup campaign in Group J on June 17 against Argentina before facing Jordan and Austria.
