All rain, some pain, still heading to Maine (Day 56)

It was another rainy night, the sixth in a row. I actually slept very well, but packing a wet tent is never fun. Another rainy day was coming up and I’ve been having trouble deciding which socks to wear each day. My shoes never get a chance to dry, so I immediately get my socks wet every morning. So it seems like a waste to put on dry socks every day, but putting on wet socks also sucks.

magic trail

Today was a long 18 miles, with two big climbs. I did the first one early in the afternoon and about halfway there was a magical trail, a happy surprise. The gentleman who organized it was called Easy Boy and he was accompanied by his friendly dog Molly. It installed a much-appreciated hand-washing station, along with snacks and cold drinks. She let us give Molly some treats and she was grateful.

The raindrops keep falling on my head

The constant on and off rain is starting to dampen my mood a bit. It seems like storm clouds come and go all day long. As I walk, if I’m not drenched from the rain, I’m drenched in sweat from the intense humidity. Because the rain has continued for so many days and nights, my shoes and socks are almost constantly wet. Fortunately, my feet have held up well, but I can’t say the same for some of the other hikers.

I am still double treating my water and hope to be in good health. I’m sleeping at the Sarver Hollow Shelter tonight, so it’s nice not to have to pitch my tent. However, there was a very steep side trail going down here and it won’t be fun going back up tomorrow. But that is a problem for my future.
