Bayern Munich’s Luis Diaz and Michael Olise scored late goals to give the hosts a dramatic 4-3 comeback (6-4 on aggregate) over Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-finals on Wednesday and send them to the last four after a thrilling draw.
Diaz struck in the 89th minute and Olise in stoppage time to seal Bayern’s treble-chase place in the semi-finals, where they will play holders Paris Saint-Germain.
Real had substitute Eduardo Camavinga sent off in the 86th after two bookings in eight minutes before Real’s double-scorer Arda Guler was given his marching orders for dissent late in the match as frustration boiled over from Europe’s record 15-time champions.
Bayern is only the second team to fall behind three or more times and still win a Champions League match.
“It was a great night for the club,” said Bayern coach Vincent Kompany. «What remains for me is the total togetherness we showed. That’s what we get out of the game. We showed absolute belief and will to fight our way back into the game.»
It took just 35 seconds of a pulsating five-goal first half for Real to score, with 40-year-old goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, Man of the Match in last week’s first leg, making a huge blunder and sending his pass straight to Guler, who fired into an empty net.
The Bavarians, fresh from setting a new Bundesliga record for most goals in a single season, made up for it five minutes later, thanks to Aleksandar Pavlovic’s unmarked header close to the goal line, with ‘keeper Andriy Lunin completely out of position.
21-year-old Guler came to Real’s rescue again and fired a free kick over the wall past Neuer into the top corner in the 29th minute, making the score 2-1. Guler had not scored a goal in his previous twenty matches in the competition.
Bayern bounced back again when Kane scored his twelfth goal in this season’s competition eight minutes later, before Real, vying for their only realistic chance of a trophy this season, responded through top scorer Mbappe, who equalized just before half-time after an assist from Vinicius Jr. for his fifteenth Champions League goal.
LET DRAMA
The pace dropped after the break but Neuer, who made a record 25 appearances in the Champions League quarter-finals, had to come to their rescue and block Mbappe’s powerful shot early in the second half.
But there was even more drama in the match, with Camavinga sent off four minutes from time for holding the ball after a foul.
“It was all over after the red card,” said Real coach Alvaro Arbeloa. «You can’t send a player away for something like that on such a big stage. It’s a shame to ruin such a great match.»
Bayern took full advantage of the extra man and scored through Diaz’s deflected goal before Man-of-the-Match Olise sealed a famous win for the six-time European champions.
«I feel for my players. For the effort they put in,» Arbeloa said. «It hurts because Real Madrid will not win their 16th title this year. I am very proud. We will go back to Madrid having given everything.»
