Ecuador coach Sebastian Beccacece said all Ecuadorians have much to celebrate on Thursday after the country’s biggest ever World Cup result, when they came from behind to beat Germany 2-1 and advance to the knockout stages.
Ecuador’s victory at the stadium in New York/New Jersey saw the country finish as one of the eight best teams in third place out of the twelve groups.
«Now it’s time to celebrate. Time to share this feeling with your family, your friends, to drink your beer,» the Argentine coach told a news conference.

«It’s the biggest victory for Ecuador in a World Cup. That’s what we worked for, we came with the dream of making Ecuador’s best cup ever, and now we have done it,» he added.
Beccacece praised the players for raising their game and overcoming their disappointing opening matches, when Ecuador lost to Ivory Coast and then drew 0-0 against tournament debutants Curacao.
He told reporters that no changes had been made to the team’s playing style.
«We kept the calm. We kept exactly the same idea of how to play,» he said, adding that he felt the team did not deserve its previous results.
«That’s how football is: one day you win, the next day you lose. We weren’t in hell before, and I don’t think we’re in heaven now. The most important thing is balance.»
«I don’t think we were better than Curaçao, nor did we feel less than Germany. We will continue, with humility and with caution.»
