Canadian star Alphonso Davies is struggling to be fit for the 2026 World Cup, Bayern Munich has warned

Bayern Munich vowed Friday to do everything it could to give injury-hit star Alphonso Davies the chance to be fit to play for Canada in the World Cup.

The club’s sporting director Max Eberl said the Bundesliga champions were working with Canada Soccer with an eye not only to the World Cup, but also to the player’s long-term fitness.

«Our hope is that we can all work together to do what is best for Phonzy,» Eberl told a news conference ahead of Bayern’s final Bundesliga match of the season against Cologne.

Canada will play all three group games at home, starting with Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto on June 12.

«Tragically, he suffered an injury on home soil prior to the World Cup,» Eberl said. “We will all work together to make sure he gets a chance, but for that to happen he has to get fit. He has to accept that and he does.”

Since returning in December after a long absence following a knee ligament tear, the 25-year-old has suffered a series of muscle injuries, the most recent after coming on as a substitute as Bayern were knocked out of the Champions League by Paris Saint-Germain on May 6.

Davies suffered an injury to the back of his left thigh that will keep him out of action for “several weeks,” Eberl said, meaning he will miss not only Saturday’s home game against Cologne but also the German Cup final against Stuttgart in Berlin on May 23.

Canada plans to announce its 26-man World Cup squad on May 29.
