Chap. 45 – Leg strength and longing

Tonight I feel a little less than thirty miles from Kennedy Meadows South. Just as we’re getting this whole desert thing sorted out, we’re about to finish the PCT section on the desert. I already find myself remembering the desert. The naps, the sun, the wildlife, and the people we shared it with made it worth it. I’m ready for the Sierra and looking forward to something new starting!

Frodo, Boostie, the Aussies and I left Ridgecrest around 7am this morning. Well, our goal was 7am, but we didn’t start hiking until around 8am. I actually felt pretty good on the first climb and for most of the day. I easily kept up with the Aussies and actually took the lead for a while after the first water source. At the second water fountain, the Australians and Frodo started before me. I wanted to help Boostie get water since the stream was surrounded by bees!

Probably one of the most chaotic meals I’ve ever seen Boostie pack out of town was his sandwich today. By sandwich I mean an entire loaf of bread with almost half a kilo of ham inside. It seemed like some kind of eyesore, but at least he seemed to enjoy it.

Chap. 45 – Leg strength and longing

I spent the last part of the day hiking up four miles, so I listened to some music. Since the views were so beautiful as we ascended, I thought classical music could add to the experience. I played Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, recomposed by Max Richter. Hearing that while hiking really improved the atmosphere of the trail! My eyes filled with tears as I looked at the ridges.

«Thank you.»

I said it out loud. To the universe, to the path, to the desert. I thanked the desert for everything it gave me. I have been very grateful for this experience so far and can’t wait to see what these last few days of desert will bring.

Filtered water, surrounded by a surprising amount of vegetation.
