Cole Palmer, who has only recently returned from injury, will be rested for Chelsea’s Champions League trip to Atalanta on Tuesday.
The England forward made his first start for his club since September in Saturday’s goalless Premier League draw against Bournemouth.
“Cole is part of his process at the moment,” Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca said at his pre-match press conference on Monday. «He is not available, he cannot play two games in a row in three days. We have planned that and it is just a way to protect him.»
Palmer was initially sidelined by a groin problem before his return was delayed by a toe injury.
Liam Delap is also absent after the striker suffered a shoulder injury at Bournemouth, but Maresca had a positive update on him. “Fortunately, Liam does not have a fracture, so that is good news,” said the Italian. «We are not sure at this point how long he will be out.»
Chelsea are seventh in the Champions League table after beating Barcelona 3-0 at Stamford Bridge last time out.
