Daleville VA – Fox’s AT Thru Hike – Day 51

This morning I got up early to ride nine miles downhill to Daleville. Except it wasn’t all downhill. I should really look at the map next time. But everything went downhill.

Daleville has everything I needed within a half mile of the trailhead. The owner helped me a lot and was patient with me. I honestly don’t know why it’s so difficult to buy. I use my brain, planning, while I walk. My brain is very active, but finding things in a store has become a challenge. Maybe all the stores are laid out differently than what I’m used to.

The only thing that wasn’t really available was decent city food. The barbecue place supposedly had portions for hikers, but the portion would have been small before the hike and the food was… quite disappointing, even with the hungry hikers.

Somehow, I only packed 9 pounds of food into my mailbox, so I pressured Kroger to add three more. After reloading at Kroger, I just needed to finish loading. Fortunately, the cafe was nice and allowed me to have a latte while all my devices charged.

Between shopping and loading, I was in the city for five hours. I still made it to Wilson Creek, for a 20 mile day.

1/3 of the way!

If you want to become the hero of Daleville, this is what I recommend.

Visit the supplier for what you need there. They let me leave my things plugged in. Press Kroger. Skip the BBQ and Bojangles (not worth it) and also shop Kroger for city food. If you need more time, relax in the cafeteria.
