Co-owner David Beckham said it will take some time before Inter Miami CF appoints a new head coach following the abrupt departure of Javier Mascherano at the start of the season on Tuesday.
Mascherano resigned for personal reasons in a statement.
Sporting director Guillermo Hoyos has been given interim management of the Herons (3-1-3, 12 points), who return to action on Saturday against the Colorado Rapids in Commerce City, Colorado.
Beckham told CBS Sports that losing Mascherano at this stage was “difficult”. The 41-year-old Mascherano had taken over on November 26, 2024 and led Inter Miami CF to the MLS Cup title in 2025.
“He came off last season winning our first championship,” Beckham said. «He’s a great person, a great coach, the players loved him, but obviously these things happen in football clubs and we have to move on. We have to find a new coach at some point. But right now we have to let things sink in. But, as I said, when owning a team there are always challenges.»
Mascherano had replaced Gerardo “Tata” Martino. During his tenure the club also reached the final of the Leagues Cup and the semi-finals of the CONCACAF Champions Cup.
This was Mascherano’s first coaching role for senior clubs. He started his managerial career with the Argentina youth teams in 2021, leading them to the round of 16 of the 2023 FIFA Under-20 World Cup and the quarter-finals of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
Meanwhile, Inter Miami’s chief football officer Alberto Marrero will take over the responsibilities of sporting director from Hoyos.
