Day 2: Climbing above the clouds!

We had a great night’s sleep in our tent! Better than the sleepers in the shelter today. One of them found a family of about 15 mice in the shelter. Disgusting! Everyone went out in the dark and set up their tents.

Along the way we met some people with whom we had very good conversations. That’s something that really stands out: everyone here is very friendly, interested and talkative. In the Netherlands, you’re lucky if someone nods awkwardly when you walk past them. That’s +1 for the US, or at least for Georgia.

Sassafras Mountain was the first challenging climb we had. After that, the trail was pretty flat, which we enjoyed. We had lunch at Justice Creek. That was a cool place! One of the hikers was carrying a 65-pound pack on his back. He had a great sense of humor about it, which made us laugh too much.

The rest of the day was great too. The weather was good, although a little hot. The trail was great and the people were very nice. Just a beautiful day for a hike.

If we hadn’t slowed down a little yesterday, we wouldn’t have enjoyed as much today. It made me realize that we can only achieve the long-term goal of finishing the AT if we focus on the short term, which seems very contrary to what we have been taught our entire lives. I wonder where else this applies in our lives.

After a 12 mile hike, we were picked up at Woody Gap to sleep at the Above the Clouds lodge. After a necessary shower and stuffing ourselves with pizza, of course. I heard there’s even breakfast tomorrow! I can’t wait!
