Real Madrid has issued a statement denying reports linking the club with a move for Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez, insisting it has «no intention» to sign the Argentina international.
The 25-year-old, currently on World Cup duty with Argentina, has been heavily linked with a move to Santiago Bernabeu. Fernandez had previously suggested he would be open to joining the Spanish club, prompting former Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior to sanction him in April after he publicly raised the possibility of a summer move.
However, Real Madrid have now categorically dismissed the speculation.
“In light of the reports and statements that have emerged in recent days regarding an alleged interest of Real Madrid CF in the player Enzo Fernández, the club would like to declare that it has not made any attempt, directly or indirectly, to sign the aforementioned player nor does it intend to undertake any such operation,” the club said in a statement on Friday.
Madrid also expressed its respect for Fernandez and Chelsea, highlighting the “excellent institutional relationship” between the two clubs. It added that continued speculation about a possible transfer was unfounded and risked causing confusion among supporters while harming the clubs and individuals involved.
This is not the first time Madrid has taken public action to dismiss speculation involving a player from another club. Earlier this month, the Spanish giants clarified their position amid reports linking him with Bayern Munich winger Michael Olise.
Madrid has also recently been involved in a public dispute with city rivals Atletico Madrid after reportedly making a €150 million bid for Argentine striker Julian Alvarez.
Meanwhile, Fernandez remains focused on Argentina’s bid to win the World Cup for the second time in a row. La Albiceleste will play a round of 32 against Cape Verde in Miami on Friday evening.
Argentina advanced through the group stage with three consecutive victories over Algeria, Austria and Jordan. A win against Cape Verde would set up a last-16 meeting with Egypt or Australia.
