World Cups have a habit of bringing together football worlds that rarely intersect. In 33 degrees Celsius heat, the rhythm of West Africa finally overcame the resilience of the Andes as Ivory Coast defeated Ecuador 1-0 in Philadelphia to start its 2026 World Cup campaign with a crucial win.
Neither side arrived in North America with the burden of expectations born from the game’s traditional powers, and it was Ivory Coast that left with momentum and belief on its side.
Ecuador almost made the perfect start. Veteran striker Enner Valencia should have given the South Americans an early lead after centre-back Emmanuel Agbadou slipped in the 10th minute while trying to get a hopeful ball into the penalty area. The opportunity fell in the skipper’s favor, but he dragged his effort just over the bar, much to the anguish of the largely Ecuadorian crowd.
Ivory Coast, which returned to the World Cup after missing the last two editions, responded seven minutes later. Bazoumana Toure came in from the left and fired a shot that passed the post as long as a shoelace, the difference in millimeters between a roar and a groan.

Agbadou’s difficult opening almost proved costly again in the 23rd minute when another mistake allowed John Yeboah to fire a shot that left Yahia Fofana in place. The goalkeeper watched in horror as the ball bounced against the crossbar. The sound sounded like a warning siren for the Ivorians.
A moment later, Alan Minda came even closer. Played by Pedro Vite, he hit the sack again as Ecuador, one of South America’s most organized and reliable sides, began to discover new cracks in the opposition’s defense. The pressure increased, with each attack feeling a little more dangerous than the last.
Ivory Coast, however, remained dangerous during the break. Alan Franco was forced into a last-ditch block to deny Nicolas Pepe after the former Arsenal winger forced his way into a promising patch of space, making for a breathless end to the first half.
After the restart it was Ivory Coast’s turn to rattle the crossbar as Elye Wahi burst from his marker, but the woodwork continued to play the role of an extra defender. Yan Diamonde then danced past a series of challenges in the penalty area, but the finish didn’t match the choreography as the ball sailed harmlessly high.

Gonzalo Plata’s powerful strike from distance forced Fofana into a rare moment of alarm. The Ivorian goalkeeper chose caution over confidence and parried the ball back into play rather than holding on, but Ecuador were too slow to capitalize on the rebound.
But after flirting with a breakthrough for much of the evening, it was Ivory Coast that found the breakthrough in the final remains of the match. Wilfried Singo whipped a pass to the edge of the penalty area, and Amad Diallo provided the composure missing for most of the night, caressing his finish into the bottom left corner and sending his team into delirium.
It was a brutal ending for Ecuador, who had hit the crossbar twice and created enough chances to leave Philadelphia with something to show for their efforts.
The victory left Ivory Coast level on points with Germany, who had earlier started their Group E campaign with a 7-1 defeat of Curacao.
