Argentina has named Marcos Senesi as the replacement for the injured Leonardo Balerdi for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which starts on June 11 in the US, Canada and Mexico.
Marseille centre-back Balerdi, who was about to play in his first World Cup, suffered a calf injury to his right leg last week.
Senesi will join the defending champions’ squad ahead of the opening match against Algeria on June 15.
Senesi had an excellent season for Premier League side Bournemouth and became a crucial figure in making club history as the side will play in European club competition for the first time next season.
However, despite the promise of Europa League action, Senesi turned down a new contract, with the ball-playing defender preferring a free transfer to Tottenham Hotspur, who narrowly avoided relegation last season.
The 29-year-old has three senior caps for Argentina.
