FIFA World Cup 2026 — Colombia overtakes debutant Uzbekistan

Colombia started its 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a 3-1 win against debutants Uzbekistan in the Group K match at the Mexico City Stadium on Wednesday.

In a match with few chances, it was Colombia who took the lead in the 41st minute after Daniel Munoz produced a well-timed point and finished from Luis Diaz’s chipped cross.

Uzbekistan responded 15 minutes into the second half when 22-year-old Abbosbek Fayzullaev grabbed the country’s first-ever goal at the World Cup with an easy tap-in header.

However, parity lasted just three minutes as Diaz found the back of the net with a clean finish from inside the penalty area.

The match was stopped in the ninth minute of extra time when substitutes Cucho Hernandez and Jaminton Campaz came together, with the latter heading in from close range.
