Deniz Undav scored two goals from the bench as Germany staged a thrilling comeback to beat Ivory Coast 2-1 in their World Cup Group E match on Saturday, securing a place in the knockout stages for the first time since they won the title in 2014.
Germany had the ball in the back of the net before the first hydration break, but a foul on Ivory Coast goalkeeper Yahia Fofana kept the match scoreless, but not for long. Shortly after play resumed, Ivory Coast captain Franck Kessie crossed the ball past Manuel Neuer for the lead.
German forward Kai Havertz subsequently had a goal disallowed for a foul, but his luck began to turn in the second half when substitute Undav sent the ball through the roof of the net to equalize. Germany pushed for the winner and Undav was the hero, firing the ball home in the 94th minute.
Germany leads Group E with six points and is through to the last 32, while Ivory Coast is on three after two games. Ecuador and Curaçao meet later on Saturday in Kansas City.
