In FIFA World Cup 2026, a player or an official who received a red card would be suspended for at least the subsequent match. This applies to both straight red cards and double yellow cards.
How does red card suspension work?
According to Article 10.5 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup Rules: «If a player or team official is sent off as a result of a direct or indirect red card (second warning), he or she will be automatically suspended from his team’s next match. In addition, further sanctions may be imposed.»
As the final rule suggests, a player or official’s suspension may be extended based on the severity of their offense. Such decisions are made by FIFA’s disciplinary committee.
Earlier in the tournament, Qatar’s Assim Madibo was handed a five-match ban after review by the committee for a tough challenge that led to Canadian Ismael Kone suffering a broken leg.
Can a team appeal against a red card suspension?
Teams cannot appeal to revoke a red card during the FIFA World Cup.
The tournament regulations (Article 9.6) state: «No protest may be lodged against the decisions of the referee in relation to facts relating to the game. Such decisions are final and not subject to appeal unless otherwise provided in the FIFA Disciplinary Code.»
But the team can appeal the disciplinary committee’s decision to extend the suspension. Even if this appeal is successful, the original one-match suspension will remain in effect.
