Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo’s two second-half misses against the Democratic Republic of Congo and a largely anonymous display have done little to discourage those who feel he is past his prime and is not the man to lead his country to World Cup success.
Portugal were held to a 1-1 draw in Group K by a Congolese side appearing in their first global final in 52 years.
The 41-year-old Ronaldo is in his sixth World Cup, a record he holds together with the Argentinian Lionel Messi. He had two chances to win the match, both of which he put wide from close range.
The frustration of his captain Bruno Fernandes, who was behind Ronaldo in the first of the chances, was clear and long-lasting.
Ronaldo had the fewest ball touches (25) of all Portuguese players who played for more than 45 minutes.
Portugal coach Roberto Martinez was in no mood to speak specifically about Ronaldo’s performance at the post-match press conference, suggesting the forward did not get the support he needed.
«We have to use all the players on the pitch. The main striker (Ronaldo) has to be close to the six-yard box and we have to get the ball (to him).»
When asked if he was considering replacing Ronaldo, Martinez said the striker’s experience was crucial.
«There’s no point in taking out the best goalscorer in world football in a match where you need goals,» he said.
«For us, in moments like this, Cristiano’s experience in the penalty area is important. The way he attracts defenders is important, the way we can use space is important. And every player has a responsibility or a piece of quality on the pitch. And if you are looking for goals, you have to have Cristiano.»
The debate over whether Ronaldo should be used as a starter, off the bench or not at all, is not new.
His incredible goal tally of 143 goals in 229 international matches – both records in international men’s football – makes him one of the greats of football.
But Portugal are not lacking in talent in attacking areas.
They are in action against Uzbekistan in Houston on Tuesday before facing Colombia in a final Group K match in Miami on June 27.
