Experienced Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani has announced his departure from Boca Juniors after a three-year spell with the Argentine club.
The 39-year-old, who previously played for Paris Saint-Germain, Napoli and Manchester United, joined Boca in July 2023 after leaving Valencia.
«As a coach of mine once taught me, the journey is the reward. And the journey has been wonderful,» Cavani said in a video on Instagram, without indicating whether he plans to retire from club football.
Cavani, nicknamed “El Matador”, is Uruguay’s second-highest goalscorer of all time, with 58 goals in 136 appearances. He retired from international football two years ago.
Cavani leaves Boca without winning a trophy and admitted recurring injuries prevented him from making the impact he had hoped for.
“I have had difficult moments that prevented me from leaving the impression I wanted at this club,” he said.
Hampered by fitness problems during his time in Buenos Aires, Cavani played 81 matches, completing the full 90 minutes in just 27 minutes and scoring 28 goals.
Before joining Boca, Cavani enjoyed a glittering club career in Europe. He won six Ligue 1 titles during a seven-year spell at PSG between 2013 and 2020, before spending two seasons at Manchester United.
