Hot day today. A large group staying at the oasis was going to have breakfast at the Cowboy Tavern. I couldn’t pass up one last hot meal in town, so I joined the group for coffee and a breakfast burrito. Then I crossed the street to grab some last snacks from the market.
We were dragging our feet this morning. The weather showed a warm day and our map showed a big climb. Today was the first time I didn’t want to walk. I missed my family, my friends and my dog and the last thing I wanted to do was walk up this hill in the middle of the day. I seriously considered staying at the oasis one more night, but I knew this feeling would pass as soon as the hike began.

He was right. The climb was hot and long but tolerable. Additionally, we met a local couple walking their dogs, a husky and an Australian shepherd. Australian pets were exactly what I needed to get out of the bad time I was stuck in. I sped up the climb and took a long lunch break in the shade next to a water pipe.

The hills we have been walking through have been so beautiful. There are miles of golden grass mixed with bright yellow wildflowers. The entire hillside looks like a sea of gold. Although the miles were a little slow today, we had a beautiful backdrop to make up for it.

Towards the end of the day I was a little confused about our mileage. I didn’t think we’d make it to our dad’s camp finish line, but I didn’t want to stop at the shorter camp finish line, so I thought we could camp in the middle. I came to a small memorial bench that had little potential for even one person as a cowboy camp. Contemplating my options, Bug approached and encouraged me to continue forward to the farthest camp. We were literally running to cover the last few kilometers until sunset. We arrived around 8:00 pm, which is definitely the last time I’ve been out on a hike.

As the camp dismissed me, I was also a little bewildered by the water, and had enough to get me through the night, but not enough for a full dinner. So tonight I had a girls’ dinner at a cliff bar, trail mix, chips and jelly beans. It’s not a bad spread. I quickly set up my tent before it got dark and went inside. I’m so glad I didn’t cowboy camp on the bank tonight.
