We’re coming to North Carolina! I started hiking today, about 8 miles from the border, and left Georgia around lunchtime. Three other hikers and I took a break at Bly Gap, refilled our water bottles, and shared snacks. It seemed to mark the first small milestone on the path.
Uphill climbs
North Carolina gave us two very steep climbs almost immediately upon entering the state. It was just the warm welcome you would expect from the southern AT. However, the hike was beautiful and we saw many small wildflowers and butterflies along the trail. I spent some time walking with a girl who can identify many of them. It makes me think of my dad, who I know could probably do the same thing.

Concerns about the camp
We are camping at Muskrat Creek Shelter and it will be another cold night. I really hope the weather improves soon. My gear should keep me comfortable in these temperatures, but I always seem to wake up several times each night from the cold. There have been rumors of bear activity at this refuge. I’m still using my Ursack and hope it holds up to the test.
