I got up early this morning and hitchhiked with some hikers who had scheduled an Uber back to the trail. The temperature is still high, but not as high as yesterday and the day before yesterday. Still, I was glad to get an early start.
Can’t be found anywhere
The main stop on the trail today would be «The Pinnacle», a rocky cliff facing east. It is known for its magnificent views and large snake population. I was excited to experience both. It was midday when I arrived and I first passed a large cairn before dropping my pack and walking along the rocks. The views were magnificent, although I looked everywhere and didn’t see a single snake. I wonder if it’s too hot for them.
If a tree falls in the forest…
A group of us camped in a small dispersed campsite just past a small stream. Just as everyone was climbing into their tents for the night, a loud crack was heard and a large tree in our campsite snapped in half and the top crashed to the ground. Right next to it was a tent for hikers, but fortunately the trunk fell in the opposite direction. We all stared at the fresh stump for a minute, in disbelief that it had collapsed so suddenly. A tree fell in the forest, I was there to see it and it definitely made a sound.
Now I’m back in my tent and my blood is still pumping a little. The occasional burst of nearby fireworks can be heard, but other than that, there will be no Christmas celebrations tonight. I’ve had enough excitement for one night.
