Hikers discover human remains near Vermont’s Appalachian Trail

TOAuthorities are investigating after a group of hikers discovered human remains in Vermont’s Green Mountain National Forest near the town of Mount Tabor late last month. Hikers contacted police on April 25 after discovering what appeared to be human foot bones inside a pair of hiking boots partially buried in a swampy area of the national forest.

Troopers responded to the scene and initially found no additional remains, but on May 4, a more extensive search with the help of North Country search dogs and U.S. Forest Service personnel found additional human remains nearby. Investigators also found outdoor equipment and personal items covered in leaves and dirt.

The Appalachian Trail runs just east of Mount Tabor through the national forest, but officials have not specified whether the remains were discovered on the AT or elsewhere.

Vermont State Police secured the remains and confirmed they are human. No further information is available regarding the identity of the deceased or the cause of death at this time.

This is an ongoing investigation and police have asked anyone with relevant information regarding this case to call 802-773-9101.
