Inter Milan secured the Serie A title with a 2-0 win over Parma on home turf on Sunday, establishing an unassailable lead at the top of the table.
Marcus Thuram opened the scoring in first-half stoppage time before Henrikh Mkhitaryan sealed the win ten minutes from time. Inter climbed to 82 points and took their 21st Scudetto with three games to go.
Inter went into the match knowing a point would be enough after second-placed Napoli were held to a 0-0 draw in Como on Saturday. Sunday’s result gave the team a twelve-point lead over Napoli.
«I’ve always said you can make mistakes on the pitch, but this team has never lost the desire to stay together. We always gave everything we had; you can win or lose, but I am so proud of these players,» said Nicolo Barella. DAZN.
Inter in control
Despite the scarcity of clear chances, Inter controlled much of the first half and established themselves deep in the Parma half.
The hosts came close in the 25th minute when a powerful shot from close range from Barella hit the underside of the crossbar. The rebound then hit Parma goalkeeper Zion Suzuki on the back, but the Japan international reacted quickly and tapped the ball away from close to the line and out of danger.
Thuram caused a stir among the home fans in first-half stoppage time after being found unmarked by a through ball from Piotr Zielinski that gave Inter the lead.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with Inter maintaining control but failing to capitalize on its dominance as the supporters in the stadium increasingly focused on the clock ticking towards 90 minutes.
Federico Dimarco delivered a near-perfect cross to Denzel Dumfries in the closing stages, but the defender failed to control his first touch, sending the close-range strike high over the bar and missing the chance to seal the match.
Mkhitaryan sealed the victory ten minutes from time, tapping in a low cross from Lautaro Martinez to secure the points and spark title celebrations among the Inter supporters.
Redemption after heartbreak last season
For Inter, the triumph offered redemption after the heartbreak of last season, when the club lost the Serie A title on the final matchday before beating Paris St. Germain 5-0 in the Champions League final.
«We feel so happy now. It was not easy to start again after a season in which we lost all the competitions we were in at the end, but I am very happy with this performance today,» Martinez said.
«It was a very important goal for us; perhaps many didn’t see us as favorites given what happened last season, but we worked so hard both on and off the pitch.»
Parma thought they had scored a goal back late in the match through Nesta Elphege, but the goal was disallowed after Pontus Almqvist was offside in the build-up.
Inter substitute Davide Frattesi almost added a third after replacing Barella, although his volley from a Dimarco cross was smothered by goalkeeper Suzuki just before it could cross the line.
