Ashley Westwood didn’t mince her words after Kerala Blasters’ 1-1 draw against NorthEast United FC on Wednesday.
“Apparently very, very disappointed with the result,” the new coach said at the end of the closely fought ISL match on Vishu day. «If you get chances, as good as we had, of course you have to score and the game is over. The longer it stays at 1-0, they will always keep pushing and pushing the opponent and they are going to get chances at this level.»
And that’s what happened. With just a few minutes to go in normal time, the visitors found the equalizer.
Westwood, who only took charge midway through a frustrating campaign for Blasters a fortnight ago, was hoping his boys could add another three points following the away win against Bengaluru FC.
That was in fact the last away game for Blasters. All remaining games are at home. It will take on Jamshedpur FC on Saturday.
The Blasters remain second from bottom and therefore still face the threat of relegation alongside Mohammedan Sporting, who have lost all seven of their games. The two wrestling sides will come face to face on May 10.
Given the improvement the Blasters have shown under Westwood, and the way the team has gone from strength to strength with the additions of Ndiaye Fallou, Karim Benarif and Franchu, there is reason to hope they can improve the position before the shortened season is over. But they have to win games.
