Chennaiyin FC’s defense will be put to the test on Wednesday when they face Punjab FC in the Indian Super League at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi.
While Punjab have looked solid this season, they were arguably defeated by Sporting Club Delhi in the goalless draw last Saturday. With Chennaiyin languishing at 12th in the 14-team standings, the hosts will look to take advantage of the southern team’s troubles.
Chennaiyin go into the match on the back of a 1-4 defeat against Jamshedpur FC. The former two-time champion was plagued by inconsistency, managing just two wins and three draws in ten matches.

An interesting subplot is the contrasting defensive data. While Punjab’s backline has conceded just eight goals, joint-third best in the league in 2025/26, the visitors have conceded 14 goals so far.
Punjab head coach Panagiotis Dilperis emphasized the importance of execution and decision-making.
«The game depends on our performance, our concentration and how we will execute our plans. We will not give the opposition the opportunity to create attacking patterns,» Dimperis told the media.
Besides defensive stability, Punjab will also have to show more astuteness in the attacking third. It is the responsibility of Nsungusi Effiong and Bede Osuji to provide that impetus.
