I haven’t written much because I want to be fully immersed in this incredible experience of climbing the AT. I’m still moving forward, going pretty slowly, taking too many photos and too many days off. I am retired. I am on vacation. And I’m having the best time of my life. Literally. But I could never do it alone.
And that admission statement comes from a tried and true introvert, a would-be hermit, a true loner. It’s surprising, even to me, that it takes a village to hike the AT.
That village begins at home with my very loving and understanding husband Anthony. It continues with friends, neighbors, and church family who serve as one big, happy, exuberant team following my adventures…and misadventures…day after day and week after week, sending me love, prayers, and encouragement. Their faith in me far exceeds my faith in myself and I am deeply grateful to all of them.
And then there is the community along the way. So many cheerleaders! From the amazing kindness of the trail angels to the hiking community itself, each day is transfigured by their help and encouragement. Being one of the oldest and slowest people around, I especially love the “kids” who come up to me struggling, sweating and panting as I climb the slopes and manage to gleefully yell, “You’ve got this!” or «You’re crushing it!»
I love and appreciate you all. A lot.
And this is a most beautiful and valuable lesson that the path is teaching me. Because life is our greatest teacher, and right now the trail is my life. We need each other. All of us. All the time. And the joy and grace that comes from living life together is forever. Long live the AT people!
