Jurgen Klopp has confirmed he is in negotiations to take over as Germany manager and says he has ‘recharged’ the energy he lacked when he left Liverpool.
Klopp is the German Football Association’s favorite candidate after Julian Nagelsmann resigned on Friday, four days after Germany lost on penalties to Paraguay in the World Cup round of 32.
“Julian has stepped down and the federation is working on the succession and has approached me in the course of those considerations,” Klopp said late on Friday evening from New York on German broadcaster Magenta TV in his role as World Cup commentator.
Klopp was the only coach named in a federation statement on the team’s future, which said Klopp had «indicated his willingness» to take over.
Klopp said the talks would take time due to his current contract as head of global football at Red Bull’s network of clubs.
Klopp has not coached since leaving Liverpool in 2024. He said at the time that he «had no energy left» after eight years at the club where he won the Premier League and the Champions League.
«About two years ago I left Liverpool saying I didn’t have the energy for another job or another year at Liverpool. Since then I’ve been more than charged, I’m ready,» he said.
Germany’s next national coach will have to make sweeping changes and he said he needs «intensive discussions» with the federation to agree key points on how to transform the team’s fortunes.
It was the third consecutive men’s World Cup in which Germany did not reach the round of 16. Germany have not won a knockout match since beating Argentina in the 2014 final.
Klopp said Nagelsmann was an “excellent coach” and was not responsible for the team’s deeper problems.
“German football is clearly now at a turning point,” Klopp said. “Now we have to fundamentally change things. Ultimately, whether that’s me or whoever it is, that doesn’t change the fact that changes are necessary.”
Klopp featured prominently at the World Cup as a pundit on German television and even took part in post-match interviews with Nagelsmann on the side of the pitch. In the immediate aftermath of the Paraguay loss, he said he had not considered taking the Germany job.
