Lionel Messi got another feather in his cap when he was congratulated with the Princess of Asturias Award for Sports – one of the most prestigious international awards recognizing careers of extraordinary significance and impact on society.
The truth is that it is a great pride for me to receive this recognition, because of its importance and the fact that it is recognized not only for what I do on the field, but also off it. I am very happy and very grateful. I just wanted to let you know and send everyone a big hug. Thank you and see you soon,” Messi said.
Messi, who led Argentina to the 2022 FIFA World Cup title, became the first individual footballer to receive the award.
“Leo Messi, the player who has won the most titles in the history of football, has also earned the respect and admiration of everyone for his exemplary behavior on the pitch and for his consistency, humility and dedication to team play,” the jury said.
The Princess of Asturias Award annually recognizes outstanding individuals and institutions in areas such as arts, literature, social sciences, scientific and technical research, international cooperation, Concord, communications and humanities, as well as sports.
Previous winners in the Sports category include legends such as Rafael Nadal, Michael Schumacher, Serena Williams and Eliud Kipchoge.
