Only five places in the FIFA rankings separate today’s opponents. Eighth-placed Portugal are yet to hit the top gear this season, conceding group stage draws to DR Congo and Colombia to finish second in Group K.

13th-placed Croatia were beaten by England in their first match in Group L, but recovered to beat Ghana and Panama to seal progression to the round of 32.

    The meeting will be prepared as a showdown between Luka Modric and Cristiano Ronaldo, but Croatia head coach Zlatko Dalic believes the midfield battle will decide the match.

    «I believe this will be a battle of midfielders. Portugal have excellent players in midfield. They are very good tactically. In this match every mistake will be punished,» Dalic said on Wednesday.
