Man United unveils latest plans for a new stadium to replace Old Trafford

Manchester United revealed more details about its proposed new stadium on Thursday, including the precise location of the 100,000-seat arena.

United said the new stadium would be located approximately 350 meters north-west of the existing Old Trafford stadium.

As part of a wider stadium precinct, the Premier League club said the entire project would create 48,000 local jobs and 15,000 new homes and potentially generate 7.3 billion pounds ($9.8 billion) a year for the British economy.

“Together with our partners, we have a unique opportunity to deliver a destination that will create lasting benefits for supporters, local communities and the wider region for decades to come,” said Collette Roche, CEO of United’s new stadium development. “We are committed to building a world-class stadium with our supporters, not just for them.”

Jim Ratcliffe, co-owner of United, has made it a mission to create the “largest” football stadium in the world.

When the plans were first revealed last year, it was estimated that it would cost around 2 billion pounds ($2.6 billion) to build a stadium that would surpass Wembley as the UK’s largest, with completion in time for the 2030-31 season.

The first stadium drawings included a three-spire structure. The final design has not yet been determined.

Wembley is currently Britain’s largest stadium, with a capacity of 90,000, and is home to the English national football teams.

Old Trafford is the country’s largest dedicated football stadium with a capacity of just over 74,000, but is dated compared to that of London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, which regularly hosts NFL matches.

Bombed during the Second World War, Old Trafford has been United’s home ground since 1910.
