Serie A number two, Napoli, officially appointed Massimiliano Allegri as their new head coach on Friday.
The appointment had been expected for weeks after Antonio Conte confirmed he would leave Napoli at the end of May, while AC Milan parted ways with Allegri after what the club described as «an unequivocal failure» of a season.
Allegri has signed a three-year contract with Napoli.
The 58-year-old led Milan to the Serie A title in 2011 during his first spell as manager of the Rossoneri. He later enjoyed a trophy-laden tenure at Juventus, where he won five league titles and as many Italian Cup trophies.
Allegri returned to Milan last year with the task of guiding the club back to the Champions League after finishing eighth in Serie A last season.
Despite spending much of the campaign in the top two and challenging for the title, Milan won just two of their last eight games. The late slump saw the Rossoneri drop to fifth place on the final day of the season.
Napoli, meanwhile, finished second despite being plagued by injury problems throughout the season. Conte had led the club to the Serie A title last season, his first year in charge.
Conte is now one of the leading candidates to take charge of the Italian national team, a role he previously held from 2014 to 2016.
