Mat Ryan replaces Patrick Beach ahead of the penalty shootout between Australia and Egypt at the 2026 FIFA World Cup

Australia made a late substitution in the second half of extra time of the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round 32 match against Egypt on Friday.

The Socceroos brought on experienced goalkeeper Mat Ryan to replace Patrick Beach in the 119th minute. The former Brighton keeper had not played a minute of action ahead of the knockout match.

A similar situation has occurred before during the FIFA World Cup. The Netherlands brought in Tim Krul as a replacement for Jasper Cillessen during the quarter-final of the 2014 edition in Brazil, against Costa Rica. Krul saved two penalties to secure a 4–3 win in the shootout.

The move failed to earn Australia a win as Ryan failed to keep out any of the Pharoahs’ four penalties. Australia missed two penalties, through Harry Souttar and Lucas Herrington, to give Egypt a 4:2 shootout victory.
