Messi extends unwanted record for most missed penalties at the World Cup

Lionel Messi missed a penalty for the second time during the 2026 World Cup on Tuesday during the round of 16 against Egypt in Atlanta.

The Argentina captain had also missed from the spot in the group stage against Austria. He is the first player to miss twice from 12 meters in the same edition (excluding shootouts).

Egyptian goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir dived to his left to prevent the World Cup record scorer’s penalty.

Interestingly, Messi had also missed the penalty to the same side in the match against Austria.

The 2022 World Cup winning captain now has four penalty misses across all World Cups. He has converted just four of the eight penalties he has taken during the tournament. Messi passed Ghana’s Asamoah Gyan (two) for the most missed non-shootout penalties in World Cup history when he failed to convert against Austria and has now extended that unwanted record. He previously won penalties against Iceland in 2018 and Poland in 2022.
