Mumbai City beats Punjab FC to finish third in ISL 2025-2026

By beating Punjab FC 2-0 through goals from Hmingthanmawia Ralte and Vikram Singh, Mumbai City FC kept their end of the bargain on the final day of the 2025-26 Indian Super League (ISL) season at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi.

But it wasn’t enough for the title as East Bengal defeated Inter Kashi 2-1 in Calcutta to be crowned champions.

The result in the national capital secured a third place for Mumbai City. Punjab finished fifth in the standings with 22 points from 13 matches.

As the match began to slip away from the hosts, the players lost their cool. Brash tackles from Leon Augustine and Pramveer Singh – in the 67th and 90th minutes respectively – saw Punjab reduced to nine men by the end. Goalscorer Vikram was also sent off for Mumbai City with two yellow cards towards the end of stoppage time.

After a dull first half, the match only came alive around the hour mark when Mumbai City’s Lallianzuala Chhangte and Jorge Diaz almost combined for the opening goal. However, Punjab’s defense handled the danger gracefully.

Barely a few minutes later, Punjab should have taken the lead. After a corner kick taken by Daniel Ramirez, Nsungusi Effiong jumped over a defender and headed Bede Osuji. The substitute was unchallenged from close range, but still failed to keep his shot on target.

After Augustine was given marching orders, Mumbai City made the most of the numerical advantage.
