Premier League 2025-2026: Newcastle continues to sink; Wolves on the brink of relegation

Newcastle has entered its most challenging period since the club was bought by the Saudi sovereign wealth fund.

A 2-1 home defeat to Bournemouth on Saturday was a third successive defeat in the Premier League for Newcastle, who are languishing in 14th place in the top 20-team table with five games remaining in the campaign. The team received full-time boos.

It leaves Newcastle manager Eddie Howe – hired in November 2021, weeks after being taken over by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund – under increasing pressure, with the club giving no guarantee he will be in charge beyond this season.

At St. James’ Park, Adrien Truffert broke the tie in the 85th minute with his first Premier League goal to win the match over eighth-placed Bournemouth, who are unbeaten in 13 consecutive league matches, including six wins.

Marcus Tavernier turned Rayan’s cross over the goalmouth in the 32nd minute to give the Cherries the lead. Will Osula equalized in the 68th minute after an initial offside signal was overturned in a video review.

Wolverhampton lost 3-0 at Leeds and will be relegated if third-last Tottenham beat Brighton later on Saturday.

Wolves, who have just 17 points from 33 games, have played in the Premier League for the past eight seasons.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin converted an injury-time penalty to wrap up the win after early goals from James Justin – with an overhead kick – and Noah Okafor. Leeds moved nine points clear of the relegation zone.

Brentford failed to boost their unlikely hopes of Champions League qualification with a fifth consecutive Premier League draw, this time 0-0 at home to Fulham.

Brentford could have climbed to sixth place with a win above Chelsea, who later play Manchester United, but missed a host of chances. Top scorer Igor Thiago hit the goal frame.
