Sarri leaves Lazio after mutual termination of contract

Maurizio Sarri left Lazio on Wednesday after agreeing to terminate his contract ahead of his expected move to Atalanta.

“SS Lazio announces that a mutual agreement has been reached to terminate the contracts of Head Coach Maurizio Sarri and his coaching staff,” Lazio said in a statement.

The 67-year-old Sarri leaves Lazio for the second time in just over two years after a disastrous season in which the Rome club finished ninth and lost in the Italian Cup final.

The campaign was marked by a massive boycott of matches by supporters who want former owner Claudio Lotito to sell the club.

The team has been crowned Italian champions twice, but the last time it won the Serie A title was in 2000.

Gennaro Gattuso is said to be the favorite to replace Sarri at Lazio, his first job since stepping down as Italy coach after the Azzurri failed to qualify for the World Cup.

Sarri is widely reported to be on his way to Atalanta, who have yet to sack their current coach Raffaele Palladino.
